Thyroid Health for Women Over 40: Why “Your Labs Are Normal” Isn’t The Whole Story (Ep. 213)

FMP Podcast Ep. 213

In Episode 213 of the Fit Mother Project Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Amie Hornaman — known online as the Thyroid Fixer — for a conversation that will feel uncomfortably familiar to a lot of women over 40.

You’ve been gaining weight that won’t budge. You’re tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix. Your hair is thinning, your nails are breaking, you’re cold all the time, and you’re counting the hairs in the shower drain.

So you go to your doctor. The labs come back. And you hear the sentence Dr. Amie heard from six different doctors:

“You’re normal. Everything is fine.”

Dr. Amie lived that. She was a fitness competitor eating chicken and broccoli and training twice a day — and gaining 40 pounds in three months while her coach assumed she was cheating on her diet.

Six doctors told her she was fine. The seventh gave her a diagnosis and a pill. The pill did nothing for five months, because it was T4 only, and nobody checked whether her body could actually convert it.

That’s the gap this episode closes.

Dr. Amie and I break down why TSH alone tells you almost nothing, what a full thyroid panel actually includes, and the optimal ranges functional medicine looks for versus the “within normal limits” range that keeps women dismissed.

We cover the triangle between your thyroid, your insulin, and your liver — and why you can’t put thyroid hormones on a dumpster fire.

Then we get practical: the core nutrients, the foods, the gluten conversation (including the nuance most practitioners skip), the Brazil nut tip that replaces a supplement bottle, and the three toxic halogens in your water that compete directly with iodine for the same receptor sites.

If you’ve ever been told your thyroid is fine while feeling anything but — this episode is for you.

Fit Mother Project Key Takeaways:

  • TSH alone is not a thyroid test. It’s a pituitary signal, not a measure of what your thyroid is producing. You can sit “within normal limits” and still have a thyroid problem — which is exactly how women get dismissed for years.
  • Ask for the full panel: TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, plus TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies. If any one marker is missing, you don’t have the full picture.
  • Optimal is not the same as “in range.” Dr. Amie wants free T3 in the upper quadrant of the range, and reverse T3 below 12 — above that, the body slides into a sluggish, hibernation-like state that looks like weight gain, fatigue, brain fog and low mood.
  • 90–95% of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s — the autoimmune form. That’s why the antibody markers matter, and why the conversation is really about your immune system, not just your gland.
  • Your thyroid, your insulin, and your liver feed each other. A thyroid under attack drives insulin resistance, insulin resistance drives fatty liver, and fatty liver reduces T4-to-T3 conversion. You have to work on all three at once.
  • You can’t put thyroid hormones on a dumpster fire. Medication on top of poor sleep, alcohol, processed food and chronic stress won’t work. The foundation comes first — for women with a diagnosis and without one.
  • Core thyroid nutrients: iodine, selenium, zinc, magnesium, vitamin D and L-tyrosine (the amino acid backbone of T3). For selenium, a couple of Brazil nuts a day beats a bottle of pills.
  • Gluten is nuanced, not universal. Molecular mimicry means gluten can look like thyroid tissue to a misprogrammed immune system — but ancient grains, non-glyphosate wheat and traditional sourdough are tolerated by some women. Know your body, and know your antibodies.
  • Your water matters more than you think. Fluoride, chlorine and bromide are halogens that compete with iodine for the same receptor sites. Filter your tap and your shower, and consider iodine support.
  • Vitamin D is a hormone, and it’s an immune lever. Dr. Amie likes levels at 80–100 — and sees elevated autoantibodies whenever vitamin D runs low. A “normal” 30 is deficient by her standards.
