Mental blocks and regaining confidence can be some of the hardest parts of a health and fitness journey.
That was certainly the case for Fit Mother Quenna.
Like many of us, Quenna found herself at a point in life where she just felt stuck.
She was overweight, her joints were hurting, she was struggling with menopause, and was lacking confidence.
She was active for years, but once she got into her late 40s/early 50s, things started to change.
She was lacking energy, having mood swings, dealing with more pain, and gaining weight.
Then she dealt with a bad bout of COVID, and she felt like things would never be the same again.
She was miserable. She was desperate.
So, she put her doubts and fears aside and dove into the Fit Mother Project.
Fast forward about a year, and Quenna had lost over 30 lbs, reinvigorated her confidence, shed her joint pain, improved her marriage, and completely aligned her life!
Listen to Quenna's Story on the Fit Mother Project Podcast:
Feeling Lost and Hopeless
Quenna was working out three times a week, but it didn't seem to be doing much.
She started putting on menopause weight and was having frequent body pains and injuries.
Then she got COVID.
“It was 17 straight days of high fever, and it seemed like that was the point I felt like I was never going to get my energy back. My hair was falling out. I was so desperate, and I didn't know what to do.”
She was also lacking on the nutritional front.
Even when she was healthier, she only focused on exercise, nutrition was an afterthought.
At this point in her life, Quenna's doctors advised her to stop working out and just rest.
As much as she wanted to continue working out, Quenna was skeptical about going against what her doctors said, especially because she had a family history of arthritis.
“I was really nervous that I would hurt my back. I thought that maybe my form was the reason why I was dealing with injuries that just happened over time. Therefore, I was nervous about going against what my doctors advised me to do. My family has been plagued for years with arthritis, and the more that I was active, the more that I was hurting, even just walking.”
She couldn't work out, but that didn't stop Quenna from watching workout videos online.
And that's when she found the Fit Mother Project.
“Every morning I looked at videos to see if there's something that would connect with me. One video led to another, and then there was the Fit Mother Project. It was about strength training as you age and its importance, the importance of the nutrition side, building the muscles around the joints, and everything. So I thought, OK, this thing makes some good sense.”
Initially, Quenna was skeptical about joining the program, because nothing else had worked for her before.
However, with the support of her husband and the willingness to turn things around for the better, she took the plunge.

Regaining Confidence
When Quenna first started on the Fit Mother Project, it was difficult for her to really get going.
“I couldn't walk; my joints were hurting so bad from moving. It was my body saying, don’t do this.”
She said she fought the reluctance by empowering herself with positive self-talk.
“Quenna, you're going to do this for four weeks. Come hell or high water. I don't care how bad you're going to hurt. You're going to do it for four weeks and see what happens. I told myself, I'm either going to prove the doctors or Dr. Anthony wrong.”
According to Quenna, her journey with the Fit Mother Project was not easy.
She struggled along the way.
However, she always reminded herself why she was doing it.
And in the end, it was worth it.
Quenna was finally seeing positive changes in her body, and her energy level grew and grew.
She also developed good, healthy habits.
“My energy is back, and my hair has stopped falling out. I'm doing the supplements. I feel so much of a difference. Even though I have a wonderful marriage, it's gone to a whole new level. We feel like we're newly married again.”
For Quenna, and all our other Fit Mothers, the Fit Mother Project is not only a weight loss program but a positive lifestyle change.
“From the inside out, this has been an amazing journey for me, and I'm so indebted to this program. I love it. I absolutely love it.”
So what would Quenna say to someone looking to join the Fit Mother Project?
“There are some ebbs and flows; there are times we put so much emphasis on how much weight we have lost. Try not to let the scale dictate the way you feel about your success. God gave us some memory for the ability to remember. If we use that effectively, try remembering how you felt before you ever started or remember how you felt the morning after. Because we can quickly forget we live in the here and now, and we can forget how it was. I don't ever want to lose that memory; it inspires me to keep living this lifestyle because it's this that has really made a difference in how I feel. Keep going back to your mission statement. Try plugging into the Facebook group as it is a very, very vital, wonderful, supportive thing to help you through difficult times.”
3 Key Takeaways From Quenna's Journey
To summarize, here are three key lessons you can learn from Quenna’s successful health and fitness journey:
Lesson 1: Never Hesitate to Seek Support
Health and fitness journeys can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to achieve difficult goals.
In these times, reaching out to your social support is very helpful to calm yourself and unwind.
As Quenna found it encouraging to stay in tune with other Fit Mother Project members in our Facebook groups, you can also occasionally engage in your social circles and share your progress, ask questions, and generally talk about your journey.
Lesson 2: Know That It Won't Always Be Smooth Sailing
It can take a lot of effort and motivation to start a health and fitness regime, let alone stick to it.
It is natural to want to give up midway or feel like you can't do it.
But know that you started the practice with a purpose and keep reminding yourself of that.
You might feel lazy on some days but understand that the benefits of your resolution will far outweigh the costs.
Lesson 3: Engage In Positive Self-Talk
There will be days when your body will hurt in the course of acclimatizing to the health and fitness program.
Therefore, during these tough days, engage in positive self-talk and remind yourself why you started in the first place.
Repeat why fitness matters to you and what you are capable of.
Remind yourself of how far you have come.
A strong mind is an avenue to a strong body.
